Where and How Different Generations Use the Internet (and What it Means for Your Online Ads)

“Let’s advertise on every social media platform and use AI to create it all!”

This may sound like a good idea at first. After all, it’s quick and easy for artificial intelligence (AI) to create content so you can advertise on all platforms.

Choosing where to advertise and how to craft your ads isn’t as simple as picking the newest app or generating quick ads with AI.

The key is matching both your platform selection and your content style to your audience’s mindset. While Gen Z likes raw and unfiltered authenticity on TikTok and instantly rejects “AI slop,” older generations like Baby Boomers are active daily on Facebook and far less critical of AI-generated graphics.

Let’s break down the where and how of different generations using the web, plus a look at where we get this data from.

How Do We Know Where People Spend Time Online?

There are a bunch of resources out there that help us determine where people interact on the internet. Here are a few we use at 9 Clouds:

Platform-reported numbers

Social media platforms publish data on their user base, including information on age, location, how often people log in, and more.

For example, here’s some interesting data about who uses Facebook in 2026 (hint: Daily Facebook usage is highest among adults aged 50-64).

Ad audience sizes

When we run ad campaigns, we can see exactly who’s clicking, like their age range, gender, interests, and even what device they’re using (phone, computer, or tablet).

We use Meta Ads Manager to understand the demographics of people who interact with our ads, including gender and age. We also use Google Analytics’ user attribute report to view information about website visitors and their gender, age, location, etc.

Third-party research

Places like Pew Research and Sprout Social do regular studies so we don’t have to guess.

Our own data

Website traffic logs, email subscriber lists, and CRM data tell us exactly who is already converting with our business.

Where the Different Generations Are Online

Every generation grew up with the internet differently, and that shapes how they use it today.

According to Statista, here’s where the generations are on social media the most:

GenerationPrimary Social Media Platforms
Gen Z (Born 1997–2012)YouTube (91%), Instagram (86%), TikTok (79%), Facebook (77%), Snapchat (72%), X (60%)
Millennials (Born 1981–1996)YouTube (90%), Facebook (89%), Instagram (81%), TikTok (69%), Snapchat (62%), X (60%)
Gen X (Born 1965–1980)Facebook (88%), YouTube (83%), Instagram (60%), TikTok (46%), X (39%), Snapchat (31%)
Baby Boomers (Born 1946–1964)Facebook (88%), YouTube (69%), Instagram (39%), X (22%), TikTok (20%), Snapchat (11%)

Gen Z

  • Digital habits: These youngins grew up with a smartphone already in hand. I can attest that I got my first cellphone at 10 years old! They love watching short-form videos on TikTok and Instagram (they trust a real person filming in their car way more than a traditional commercial), and they do research on social media versus a search engine like Google.
  • With AI: Gen Z has a hyper-sensitive “BS detector” for AI-generated content. They can spot synthetic text, AI voiceovers, and glossy AI images almost instantly… and they don’t like it! With this group, avoid advertising that feels overly AI-generated. Focus on real and natural content.

Millennials

  • Digital Habits: This group remembers dial-up and chat rooms, but also the rise of social media. Millennials used to be on MySpace, and were early adopters of Facebook. Today, many Millennials are still on Facebook, but they also enjoy YouTube and Instagram.
  • With AI: Millennials are comfortable using AI as a personal productivity tool, but they are skeptical when brands use it carelessly in advertising. Millennials still favor genuine brand values and relatable human stories over automated ad copy.

Gen X

  • Digital Habits: This generation tends to split time between Facebook and YouTube, but they use Google to research products and services before making a decision. This age group would also rather stream Hulu or Netflix than pay for cable.
  • With AI: Gen X focuses heavily on practicality and clear information. They don’t analyze whether an ad image was generated by AI as intensely as younger generations, but they will quickly abandon brands that feel deceptive or unclear.

Baby Boomers

  • Digital Habits: They’re on Facebook more than any other social media platform, and they’re increasingly comfortable with YouTube, too. These older adults still watch cable TV and primarily rely on that for entertainment.
  • With AI: Boomers are less likely to recognize AI-generated images or copy, and rarely penalize a brand simply for using it. For this audience, clear messaging matters much more than whether a human or an AI designed the visual.

Matching Your Business to the Right Platform

Once you know who you’re talking to, deciding where and how to advertise becomes much clearer.

The question isn’t “Should I advertise on social media?” It’s “Where is my audience, and what style of ad will help them convert?”

Here is a quick rule of thumb:

  • Selling visual, trendy products to younger buyers (Gen Z and Millennials)? Advertise on TikTok and Instagram (Meta). Focus on raw, user-generated content (UGC) featuring real people. Avoid obvious AI-generated images or robotic scripts that alienate younger viewers.
  • Targeting a broad adult audience (Gen X and Boomers)? Facebook and YouTube offer great reach. AI-assisted ad graphics and creative variations perform well here without cause for any pushback.
  • Selling high-consideration items (Cars, real estate, B2B services)? Combine Google Search with YouTube video ads. People in these buying stages are looking and researching detailed facts, and want direct answers when they’re ready to make a decision.
