2017 Internet Trends Report: What You Need to Know

2017 Internet Trends Report: What You Need to Know

I’ve been listening to Avenue Q lately (#throwback). I really commiserate with Princeton. What am I going to do with my life? Why can’t I live on Avenue A?

While some questions are hard to answer, others are much simpler. Like, what’s coming in the future of Internet marketing?

Mary Meeker, Bond Capital founder, released her annual Internet Trends Report, which outlines the Internet innovations and market changes we should expect to see over the next year.

In her opinion. Over the course of 355 pages.

In case you’re not ready to dig into the Mary Meeker Internet Trends Tome Report, I’ve pared it down to the highlights most important for digital marketers.

Internet Advertising in 2017

Meeker makes a bold projection about the spending of marketing departments across the nation. She predicts Internet spend will exceed TV advertising dollars for the first time.

If you look at the trend starting around the 90s, it’s not surprising that these lines would eventually cross, but the speed at which Internet advertising is overtaking TV is most shocking.

Television ads have been around for decades — since 1941, to be exact — but online advertising is relatively new, with the first banner ads popping up in 1994.

If you do the math, it took only 24 years for the web to take down its 76-year-old grandpa, TV. If you don’t believe online advertising is agile, just take a look at those numbers again.

I’ve never seen a clearer indication that inbound marketing is disrupting the world of outbound. Traditional advertising simply cannot keep up.

Internet Advertising in the Future

Online advertising is “increasingly measurable and actionable,” Meeker says in her report.

I think this explains why more marketers are moving their ad budgets toward platforms like Google and Facebook.

Meeker highlights a 20% year-to-year growth for Google advertising and a 62% year-to-year growth for Facebook advertising.

Yes — 62%. It’s an impressive gain, even for Mr. Zuckerberg’s tech giant.

We’re huge advocates for Facebook marketing at 9 Clouds — and it has become even more measurable and actionable within the past year.

With new features like Offline Events, which allows marketers to connect online performance to direct purchases, this growth will only continue.
