[Roundup] Gobble Up These Links from November 2017

[Roundup] Gobble Up These Links from November 2017

Hold on to your pants — it’s another edition of the 9 Clouds monthly roundup!

While you were gobbling up countless Thanksgiving leftovers, watching the parade and football, and perusing Black Friday ads, we were compiling the best of the Internet from November 2017.

Here are our nine favorite links for you to eat up.

1. Accepted: Updates to Google Calendar

After years of an outdated interface, Google has finally decided to attend its own calendar event to debut a new look and feel for the web version of Google Calendar.

We’re so excited, we wrote a blog post on our favorite features of the new Google Calendar. You can still toggle back to the old version (for now), but after you test out these five sweet features, we don’t think you’ll want to.

2. Facebook Split-Tests the Wishbone

Ever wondered which ad copy would do better than another when creating a Facebook ad? Now, you can find out.

With Facebook’s new split-testing feature, you can A/B test the audiences, delivery optimization, creative, and placement for your Facebook ads.

Jon Loomer takes an in-depth look at split-testing and gives great advice.

3. See You on the Flip Side

Android Burger Battle

First, it was an update to the peach emoji. Now, the cheeseburger is being flipped.

If you hadn’t heard the latest emoji-related debate, Google erroneously put the cheese under the patty in its previous burger emoji.

Naturally, Twitter blew up last month, prompting Google to correct the order for the new Android 8.1.

4. Pass the Net Neutrality Salad

There have been a lot of interesting changes in D.C. this year.

One thing you shouldn’t roll your eyes at is net neutrality. Our own Scott Meyer shares why net neutrality is something we all should be watching and contacting our elected officials about.

5. When the Ham Flies

We may have missed the deadline for hoverboards in 2015. But now, Uber and NASA feel flying cars could easily be a thing by 2020.

UberAir is expected to “perform tens of thousands of flights each day” across Los Angeles. It will be in full swing by the 2028 Olympics.

Dallas also is in talks with NASA to bring flying cars to its city. What next?

6. 11 Herbs and Spices

Clucking Good

KFC likes social media. The fried-chicken chain has started tweet wars about competitors, posted some very random photos, and even offered a puzzle on its Twitter “About Me” section for its followers to figure out.

A Sioux Falls man did just that, realizing KFC follows only 11 people: five members of the Spice Girls and six guys named Herb (“11 Herbs and Spices”). KFC sent the man a large painting as a thank-you for guessing its puzzle correctly.

We don’t know what’s better: the actual painting getting sent to him or the fact KFC painted him being piggybacked by the Colonel himself.

 7. Pass the Russian Potatoes

Wondering if you were scammed by any Facebook ads during last year’s election?

Now, in an effort for “continued transparency,” Facebook plans to offer a tool to tell you if you were shown Russian propaganda efforts.

Facebook’s mashed-down post says the portal will be fully cooked and ready to serve by the end of the year.

8. Drinks on Us!

9 clouds team building

At our team retreat at the end of October, our office traveled to Omaha.

We worked, did some team-building things, and (of course) went out for dinner and drinks. Our party planning committee even surprised everyone with tickets to see the William Shatner.

You’d never know Shatner is 86 if he didn’t tell you. Good ol’ Bill can still command a room and light it up with laughter. He shared Star Trek jokes, he talked about how he got into showbiz, and we learned he has even recorded some music.

Several of our younger team members weren’t too familiar with him, but they still thoroughly enjoyed their time.

If William Shatner is coming to a stage near you, we highly recommend seeing him.

9. Driverless Dessert to Go

Raise your hand if you’ve driven four million miles in your life.

No hands raised? That’s okay, Waymo raised its hand for you.

Waymo recently announced that its driverless cars have covered four million miles on public roads without a driver. This month, Waymo even popped the cherry (pie) and took the safety driver out of its cars.

We don’t know about you, but we’re ready for some driverless food delivery.
