Saturday Night Live takes a comical approach to the issue of accepting your mom's friendship on Facebook.

This past Saturday comedian and star of the hit series Glee, Jane Lynch, hosted Saturday Night Live. Lynch who is often casted as the grumpy, rude lady made a great stereotypical mom who is new to Facebook. In the sketch SNL member, Andy Samberg, panics when his mom joins Facebook and now wants to be involved in every aspect of his life. Can you relate?

I remember the day my mom joined Facebook while I was still in college. I admittedly ignored the pending friend request for a few days unsure how to handle this situation, but finally bit the bullet and accepted her frienship (even without a mom filter from SNL). Privacy settings are obviously an important and serious part of the Facebook experience, but I think we all can appreciate SNL’s light-hearted approach to a privacy solution. Enjoy!

Tonight LeBron James will decide his new NBA team. That’s all dandy and nice, but the bigger story is the massive brand and marketing force that LeBron James has become. So big in fact that he gets his own one-hour special on ESPN titled “The Decision.”

LeBron’s people orchestrated an entire one-hour show on ESPN and are donating all the profits from ad sales to the Boys and Girls Club of America. On Tuesday, LeBron James joined Twitter and already has over 300,000 followers in just three days. One of James’ three tweets reads, “Good Morning! It’s your chance to ask me a question about my decision, use #lebrondecision to submit and I’ll answer them tonight.” LeBron is utilizing Twitter to take questions that he may answer during the one-hour special tonight.

Clearly, LeBron understands the power of his brand and I guarantee he is considering that when he makes his decision tonight.

I’m hoping and predicting LeBron will choose the New York Knicks. Leave your prediction below in the comments section.

I just discovered a handy new tool that enables you to take YouTube videos and put them into a format you can download to your computer.

You just never know what you’ll find on the internet, there is so much out there just waiting to be discovered. I usually discover new things when I’m faced with a challenge of doing something new which was just the case this week.

I was working on creating a powerpoint for an upcomingevent and needed to insert a video that could be found on YouTube. Now, I’ve inserted video clips and other media before but I’ve never had to pull anything start off th web. Not sure how to go about this, I turned to one of my favorite tools – Google. Whenever I’m stuck I tend to turn to Google to help me find the answer and honestly, I usually find what I need!

So, I Googled (one of my favorite new verbs!) “how to insert a YouTube video into PowerPoint.” Just like that, I had several articles and links telling me how to do just that! After checking a few out, I discovered CatchYouTube.com. Obviously someone else had my very same problem and created a super simple tool as a solution. This handy little site has you paste in the URL of the video you need, you choose the format you need it in (it’s like ordering at Subway!) and after a few moments you have the video you requested in the format you needed all ready to download to your computer.

Once I had it downloaded, I inserted it into my presentation and it worked perfectly. Hopefully this is a tool that you might find useful in the future. CatchYouTube.com is definitely bookmarked in the tools sextion of my browser!

If you’re curious about what I was putting together – come check it out tonight in Madison, SD at Ignite SD #2. It will be held at one of Madison’s newest restaurants, Mochavino, starting at 7:30pm. Admission is free so grab a friend and be ignited!

Peeling back the layers of social networks and exposing its implications.

In the recent years, we’ve all become increasingly familiar with online social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. We’ve learned how to share videos, write on each other’s walls, and even tweet the latest gossip about Justin Bieber. But beyond the chirps, tweets, and “likes”, do all our social connections have lasting impressions and implications for our lives?

Last week my brother sent me a video called “The hidden influence of social networks”. The video explained that different things like your health and emotions can be influenced by your place within the social web. Your connections in different networks have even been traced to your probability of being obese. Unique structures within a social network are formed and can be traced and tracked over time to help determine the kind of person you are. Still wondering what significance this holds? Nicholas Christakis goes on to explain his theory that people’s behavior can be predicted based on their social connections and networking. We can begin to link social networking to the likelihood of innovation, crime, warfare, and economics; in addition to the emotions and health of an individual. Did you ever think your status updates could say this much about you?

You understand that online social networks are a convenient way to stay involved and updated with what’s going on with your friends, but realizing the hidden influence of social networks, may make you think twice about the next friend request you accept on Facebook.

I want to share the Three R’s to avoiding post-conference hangover:

John highlights the new Social Media Revolution 2 video.

I often get asked this question at speaking engagements, conferences, and everyday meetings with people. Is social media a fad?

Everyone has their token statements and statistics they use to refute or disprove this illusion. Many of you may remember seeing this video, Social Media Revolution. It was posted online in July of 2009 and now has nearly two million views. But by the time Social Media Revolution got its 10,000th view the statistics and facts were already dated.

Yesterday, the team behind Social Media Revolution released their version 2.0 of the video and like the last one, the statistics are fascinating. As I’m writing this blog post the views of this video jumped from 3,432 to over 4,500. This is another great social media viral video that helps answer the question, is social media a fad? Take a look for yourself…

It’s no secret that Scott and I like to use social media. It’s also no secret that we love all the different applications people are using social media for: wearing t-shirts for a living, dumping your boyfriend or girlfriend, watering your plants, and of course picking your NHL team (wink wink).

Scott and I hope to add one more odd application for social media to that list, financing your automobile. That’s right folks, the friendly people at Ford Motor Company are launching chapter two of their Ford Fiesta campaign where they ask average Americans to drive their car and simply talk about it on social media.

Chapter one was a great success with 100 different people across the country enlisting as Ford Fiesta agents, including two right here in our own backyard.

In honor of last night’s Super Bowl commercial frendzy we decided to launch our own little Ford Fiesta commercial on why John and Scott would be great Ford Fiesta agents (it also served as our video for the application). Props to our friends Derek Johnson, CEO of Tatango and former Ford Fiesta agent, Evan White of iwearyourshirt.com, and of course Pocahontas.

Take a look at our video below and if you like it either leave a comment on YouTube or Tweet @FordFiesta with the hashtag #FordMeyer on why we should be Fiesta agents. Don’t worry this isn’t a voting contest based on how many thumbs up we receive, but we just wanted to get the buzz going about team FordMeyer. Thanks friends!
