Pop is more popular than soda
And there is a Minnesota media bias.
That according to Google’s latest tool: Books Ngram. Using Google’s giant database of 500 billion words in 5.2 million books, you can track the rise and fall of words used in English literature, as first reported by TechCrunch.
Simply type in a word followed by a comma to compare words. The tool allows you to track words all the way back to the mid 1600′s and all the way up to 2008.
As you can see from Googles research, pop has recently passed soda in usage. Admittedly of course, soda could appear in reference to baking soda, Coke or everyone’s favorite electronic band Soda Boys while pop could refer to pop culture, Coke or Batman punching sounds.
The competition between Dakota and Minnesota however seems more clear cut. There is a huge Minnesota media bias. Fortunately the popularity of Minnesota in the 1980′s and 1990′s has subsided to a more appropriate level; however, Minnesota is still mentioned three times as much as South and North Dakota combined! Seems like the Dakota War of 1862 has taken on a new form in today’s literature.
