The Future of the Facebook Like – likebutton.me

by on April 27th, 2010

If you have wondered why Facebook added the Like feature across the web, this could be it: http://www.likebutton.me/

What do you like?

This site aggregates all the likes on all the sites across the web. By dividing it into categories, viewers can quickly see trends across the web, across categories or individual sites. Wondering what people are watching on Hulu, well over 83,000 people have “liked” Glee’s Vogue video clip. What news are people currently reading? Well, almost 10,000 people have “liked” the New York Times story on how the Defense Department places too much emphasis on Powerpoints.

In essence, the new Like feature is making every site like Digg. Suddenly viewers can vote on the content they enjoy most. While this provides interesting quandaries for journalists (the most important stories might not be popular), it does create enormous power for readers. You can quickly read what is voted as the best product and can cast your vote.

Have you started using the Like button? What do you see as the future of this so-called “social web”?
